UPS cuts planned pilot layoffs

Global - UPS is reducing the number of planned pilot layoffs after successfully working with the Independent Pilots Association (IPA) to avoid or delay layoffs before they take effect.

The number of planned pilot furloughs has gone from 300 to 230, a report by AP says.

In February this year, UPS had planned to layoff 300 of its 2,800 pilots as a cost-cutting measure. Currently, 109 of 230 planned layoffs have already been implemented.

The layoffs had been required as there was an excess of crewmembers operating its airlines, LM reports. UPS is currently flying 48 fewer aircraft compared to its peak in 2003.

In addition, UPS is flying 15 fewer block hours compared to the period before the recession.

"Our hope is that the economy improves to the point we can return more employees to work. We will continue to examine business conditions and adjust pilot staffing levels appropriately in the future," says Norman Black, spokesman for UPS.
