SME    FINANCIAL CRISIS    RECESSION

Singapore - Asia is poised to lead the world out of the recession, predicts UPS chief Scott Davis. He lists three other new realities that he sees emerging after the downturn.

Asia is the epicentre of trade and SMEs who want to position themselves for the upturn must start to "think big", says Scott Davis, CEO and chairman at UPS.

"Now is the time to indicate clearly to employees the vision of the future, invest in necessary technologies and create efficiencies," he says.

At a Global Leaders Series luncheon held by the American Chambers of Commerce in Singapore yesterday, Davis listed what he calls "four realities" to take note of in the aftermath of the downturn.

  • There is a need to look into business continuity. Companies must ask themselves how they are going to react once governments the world over start cutting back on government aid packages.
  • There is going to be a vacuum in terms of trade, and the US is not likely to fill the void.
  • Countries need to put their recovery hopes on export.
  • Asia is going to lead the recovery of the global economy.

"At the end of this downturn, there will be new dimensions to the business environment and business models will change globally... companies that start adapting to the current situation will come out stronger," Davis says.
