SIA A380 makes forced turnaround
SINGAPORE AIRLINES A380 ROLLS ROYCE
Singapore - Singapore Airlines and British manufacturer Rolls Royce are probing an engine problem that caused one A380 to make a forced turnaround two and a half hours into the flight.
The A380 was carrying 444 passengers from Paris to Singapore and was forced to make a return to Paris on Sunday when problems were detected in the engine.
A spokesperson for Rolls Royce, the engine manufacturer said the engine has since been removed and is undergoing detailed investigation. "The aircraft is being fitted with a replacement engine and will continue in service," she added.
SIA however, said the Airbus A380 could have continued the flight on its three remaining engines, but the pilots decided to return to Paris as a precaution due to the long flight.
The Paris-Singapore route is being served by another Airbus A380, an SIA spokesperson said.
Airport sources said the plane took off at 12.30pm (1030 GMT, 6.30pm Singapore time) on Sunday and landed back at Charles de Gaulle airport at 5.39 pm.
The A380 began its first commercial flights from Europe in early June. Singapore Airlines was the first carrier to use the A380 and hopes to have 11 A380s in operation by the end of March.
