DEUTSCHE POST DHL    GREEN INITIATIVE    ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Singapore - DHL said its monthly electricity consumption fell by over 19% since the company put in place measures to go green, including the disabling of all non-essential lighting for the office.

Herbert Vongpusanachai, country manager, DHL Express Singapore said, "In contribution towards our company's Go-Green efforts, we have disabled all non-essential lighting from the office and set the air conditioner at 25 degrees celsius since 1 December 2008. I am happy to report that with these measures in place, our monthly electricity consumption has been reduced by more than 19%."

DHL Express recently launched "My Green Day" to raise environmental awareness among its employees

This new program is part of DHL's Go-Green Climate Protection Program to improve carbon efficiency by 30% in 2020 from 2007 levels.

By turning off the lights in their offices around the world for one hour, employees at the company will commit to a more conscious use of energy and hence a greener lifestyle at work.

"From the beginning of March this year, we disabled the use of one passenger lift and cargo lift during off-peak hours, thus successfully reducing our electricity consumption by an additional 6%, down 25% compared against the same period last year," Vongpusanachai said.

In addition to the lights-off initiative, DHL is also encouraging staff to make personal commitments, starting 5 June, to adopt more environmentally conscientious habits by reducing the use of resources such as paper and water, media sources said.

"Through this effort by DHL, we want to build awareness about how our daily practices and activities affect the environment. For example, DHL has organised a driver awareness programme that educates our employees about how their driving behaviour can improve on DHL's fuel efficiency and help the environment," said Sam Leong, country manager for DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei.
