Asia - DHL Supply Chain ranked number one in Transport Intelligence's (Ti) top 10 contract logistics players, both in Asia and globally.

The 3PL pulled in revenues in excess of 12 billion euros (US$16.8 billion)to emerge tops in the global ranking, with CEVA logistics a considerable distance behind. In third position is Swiss-based Kuehne+Nagel. The top three remained unchanged from the year before.

In Asia, the market is led by Japanese operators Hitachi, Sankyu and Mitsubishi. However, taking Japan out of the mix, DHL Supply Chain again topped the region.

DHL also topped the Europe market, followed by Wincanton and CEVA. DHL also emerged market leader in North America, and is challenged by Penske Logistics, Caterpillar Logistics Services, Ryder, UPS, Schneider and Menlo.

Making a prediction for 2009, John Manners-Bell, CEO of Ti said "With a downturn in volumes and margins being pressurised, most contract logistics companies are focusing internally rather than looking for external growth opportunities. I believe this will continue to be the case in 2009 despite the general perception that ‘distressed' targets may soon be coming onto the market."

He predicts there to be a surge of mergers and acquisitions as the market picks up in 2010.
